It’s been a few months since the showcase of this machine came out and you guys have been desperate to see a full review, and now I’ve finally got it back in to do just that. Lets run you through the specs on my model first, then gaming performance.

MSI generally always do a range of specs you can choose from, some better than others. Mine is pretty well balanced, with an i7 9750H, 16GB of RAM, a GTX 1660Ti, 240GB boot SSD and a 1TB hard drive, and at the time of filming anyway, that’ll set you back around £1250, not too bad for the spec.

Gaming performance, as you’d expect is very nice, especially on it’s 120Hz 1080p display, so lets take a look at those results.

As for how hot and bothered it gets, well that isn’t quite as good. It’s not any louder than pretty much any other gaming laptops, that is to say it’s still a jet taking off, but not extraordinary there and actually the same goes for temps. All of these laptops have a habbit of letting the CPU turbo until it badly thermal throttles, then it’ll sit at a more reasonable clock speed and around 70-80°c, but it will max out at 100°c. The GPU is more sensible, as it peaked at 76°c, which is plenty fine.

When it comes to actually gaming on it, the display won’t let you down. It’s always good to see high refresh rates on the more budget gaming laptops, as it makes the playing experience that much smoother and more enjoyable. It also helps that it’s got nice colours to the eye – I’d have no problems using this for watching youtube or doing some work on.

The same can be said about the keyboard, it’s MSI’s usual “powered by Steelseries” one, with a reasonably tactile feel to the keys, if a little mushy, and still not an ISO layout for us brits, which can be annoying, but otherwise a good and usable keyboard.

When it comes to the track pad, that’s not bad, although it probably gets a B overall as it’s pretty small, has physical buttons that feel so firm and un-moving that I wonder why they are physical buttons at all, but does have very impressive palm rejection so thumbs up there.

The I/O isn’t too bad either, with 3 USB As, DC In, an SD Card reader, Gigabit ethernet, HDMI, mini displayport, USB C, and headphone and microphone jacks, plus of course AC WiFi built in.

When it comes to their software, it can be a bit of a hit or a miss. They include Norton on every machine, and uninstalling it is the first thing I do when I get one of these in, but like I showed in the showcase, it’s also got MSI’s new app player which is basically an android emulator that lets you play mobile games on your Windows machine. It’s not the smoothest experience, and for the people who are thinking about using this to boost their rank in competitive mobile games like PUBG, those games can detect you are using a mouse and keyboard and only put you in lobbies with other mouse and keyboard players, so keep that in mind.

So, it’s a stylish machine, that doesn’t cost your entire life savings, I hope, it’s powerful enough to run anything at high settings, has a smooth gaming experience thanks to it’s nice to look at 120hz display, it does get hot and noisy, and the battery won’t last you more than a few hours of regular usage, but overall it’s a great pick. Would I put one on my desk? I think I would. It’s a good machine with a nice usage experience, and good power to back it up too.
