So you are shopping for a new 1080p 144Hz gaming monitor and you decide to look on amazon – you search just that and you are greeted with “Amazon’s Choice” – one of the top options there is this, the AOC C24G1, so in this video, and series, we are going to take a look at “Amazon’s Choice” products and see if they are actually any good, worth buying or if there is a newer or better option you should spend your hard earned cash on instead.

So, what are we looking at here then? Well, this is a 1080p 144hz gaming monitor. It’s got a curved to it, if you are into that, and uses a VA panel or vertical alignment which is kind of the middle ground between TN and IPS, but is known for ghosting a lot.

Which, yes this one does a little. It’s not the worst in the world but does leave a bit of a trail on the UFO ghosting test. That’s due to the panel having a black to white response time of around 6ms – compared to the 1-3 that’s more typical in newer TN panels. Happily though, the white to black response time is actually just 7ms so nicely balanced there.

When it comes to input lag, testing from a button press on a mouse to the gun firing in CS:GO, I was getting an average of 34ms of lag, which isn’t too bad. It’s not the fastest I’ve seen, but certainly not the slowest.

Alright, enough numbers, how was the actual gaming experience? It was pretty good. I’m not one for a curved monitor personally, so that was a little off putting, but either way it was pretty smooth, especially with freesync enabled, and while I did notice the ghosting a little, it wasn’t bad enough to detract from the experience.

As for the rest of the features, it’s well connected with 2 HDMIs, DisplayPort and VGA, has a fully adjustable stand, minus any rotation for portrait mode and reasonable viewing angles as well.

So it’s a reasonable choice, especially for it’s crazy low price tag on Amazon.com – but is there something better? Well, yes. AOC launched a newer model, the 24G2U, a flat IPS panel display with a similar response time but crazy low input lag result at just 20ms. Strangely enough, despite a similar response time, I didn’t notice any ghosting on the 24G2U while playing and that combined with it’s stunning colours and impressive viewing angles makes it an amazing option you need to check out.

Now sadly it’s out of stock on Amazon.com, but if we look at price history, it’s only $20 or so more than the G1 while being a good bit better. Here in the UK the G2 is actually even cheaper than the G1 by a pretty massive margin making buying the G2 a complete no brainer here.
