MSI’s GS line has always been their premium thin and light notebooks – high spec meets slim and quality – and I’m happy to say that in this video very much sponsored by MSI, I get to show off this all-black beauty, the GS66. I say all black, because they’ve made it pretty much matte black everywhere, from the top of the clamshell, to the base, it’s all matte black. MKBHD would love this.

On the note of quality though, they listened to a load of feedback and have improved the hinge design to make it just as flexible, but much stronger meaning it’ll last longer while still staying slim and mobile.

And mobility, it has in spades. They’ve upped the battery size to 99.99WHrs, as you may know that’s literally the limit for a single battery you can have on a plane thanks to FAA regulations, so it’s set to last a while. And, if you need to top up, they’ve also added support for using the left USB C port for charging too, so if you can’t plug in the included DC power brick, no worries just plug in a USB C battery bank or whatever.

Internals wise, it’s got some upgrades for sure. You get up to a 10th Gen Intel i9-10980HK for great on the go performance in stuff like video editing and 3d modelling, and of course gaming – and that’s tied with up to an RTX 2080 Super, a new addition to NVIDIA’s lineup adding even more power in this crazy thin chassis. Now, since this is a showcase, and because the model I’ve got is an early engineering sample, I can’t show you performance here, but if you do want to see that in a full review let me know in the comments below!

Unlike some of their competition, the laptop is pretty easy to open up, and has user replaceable RAM and SSDs which are really easy to access so if you want to upgrade later, you can which is nice. While we are inside, they’ve improved the cooler with more fan blades for better airflow and temps, and they’ve also rearranged the main speakers so they are upwards firing – they still use Dynaudio for a pretty impressive sound setup, especially on a laptop like this.

They’ve upgraded more than just the internals though, the display is the big one, it’s still 1080p but it’s now up to a whopping 300Hz, which is pretty crazy. It’s insanely smooth and responsive, while still retaining rather nice colours to the eye – something again I can check out in more detail in a review if you are interested.

They’ve tweaked the keyboard too, so now it’s got 1.5mm of key travel for a bit nicer of a typing experience, they’ve still got their massive track pad too which I think has been reinforced a little better as that felt great, and a new gaming mode 2.0 in their Dragon Center application that lets you have a crosshair in supported games and plenty more.

So, that’s a sort of first look at the new GS66 – like I said if you are interested in seeing a full review with the new RTX 2080 Super and 10th Gen Intel CPU then let me know in the comments!
