Let me run you through the tests. Because these are the sort of CPUs you buy if you have more money than sense, you are probably rocking a 1440p monitor, and something like an RTX 2080ti, so that’s what we will be using, and streaming at. Of course, quality will be important to you, so we will be playing at ultra settings, and streaming at twitch’s maximum 6000kbps bitrate. I tried higher, but it just flat out didn’t work. We are, obviously, using CPU encoding here, with the “fast” preset, and we’ll be testing the games over 180 second runs multiple times, then averaged, to get accurate results. 

As for the games, that’ll be BFV, and COD MW. So, how did they perform? Well, lets take a look.

So, as you can expect, the intel chips have a competitive advantage over Ryzen when not streaming, anywhere from a 5 to 10 FPS lead, but as soon as you start streaming… oh boy. On average, you lose anywhere from 6 to 21% of your performance, and while, at least for COD the Intel chips do hold a slight lead in average FPS, these average numbers don’t tell the whole story..

Here is a frame time graph for the 10900K. Basically, the lower those bars, and the more smooth and consistent it is, the better, right. That is not smooth. That is not consistent. In fact, those spikes peak around 45ms, which equates to 22FPS. Imagine playing at over 100FPS and having 22FPS spikes popping up every few seconds. It’s awful. 

The 9900K is actually even worse, with spikes even over 60ms, although funnily enough it is actually more consistent, if still pretty bad to play on. As you might expect, the Ryzen chips didn’t have that problem.

Then there is the footage. Now I both streamed to twitch, and recorded locally using the “High quality” OBS preset, and software encoding. Here’s the 3950X playing battlefield. My gameplay is terrible, but the footage isn’t. It’s smooth, crisp and enjoyable to watch, even if it is to laugh at the gameplay itself. Now, here’s the 9900K. I’m just going to let you watch this one for a sec.

The 10900K is a little better, but it does still drop frames every now and again, unlike the Ryzen chips. Now of course there are a million different things you could change about these tests to make them more favourable to whichever chip you actually have, including just not using it for streaming, opting to use your graphics card’s very capable encoder instead, but from a CPU streaming perspective, my vote goes quite wholeheartedly to Ryzen. You get more raw power for rendering your highlight reel for youtube, you get a better streaming experience, it draws nearly 50% the power, has cheaper motherboards available that still let you overclock and plenty more.
