Elgato has changed the game with their new streaming microphone, the Wave 3. Seriously. There are so many features that once you try them, you won’t want to use anything else. Let me run you through them and you can see what i mean, but first, if you haven’t already, consider subscribing for more videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday!

So, the Wave 3. It’s a pretty unassuming looking thing, black everywhere, save for the LEDs on the front and a snazzy Elgato logo up top. Makes you wonder what’s so special about it – and the answer it, a lot. Lets start with the best bit, the quality.

Quality is fantastic, crisp, clear and pretty remarkable for something of this size and class. Have a listen to the video for a sample.

Clipguard is an amazing feature that records 2 levels of audio simultaneously and instantly switches to the lower level if you start shouting, so you don’t “clip” the audio (distortion).

Wavelink is the software you’ll both want and need to use the Wave 3, it’s brilliant. It lets you map audio elements (your game, voice chat, music and more) to different mixers in the app, and control what you hear, vs what your stream hears.

Now I mentioned this is a USB mic, it has a type C port on the back, next to a 3.5mm headphone jack if you want to monitor audio directly from the mic. There is an ever so slight delay to the mic playback, not enough to be annoying but still slightly noticeable.

The stand that comes in the box is what I’d describe as “adequate”, the top half, the bit that connects to the microphone, is plastic, whereas the base plate that screws in is metal with a thick rubber pad on the bottom for a bit of vibration dampening, although the mic itself does wobble a fair bit in the stand.

That’s not the end of the world, especially since Elgato will sell you a shock mount for an extra £40 that you can mount to a mic stand or arm. They’ll also sell you an additional pop filter for a pretty insane £30 – which you don’t really need since they have already built a pop filter inside the mic’s housing. And while we are talking about prices, the Wave 3 itself will set you back around £160. That definitely isn’t cheap, but in the world of audio, that’s really not much either. The AudioTechnica AT2020USB costs the same or more, so while it would be nice to see it lower so more people just starting out can get in on this, I also understand where it’s at.

I’ve talked a lot about what it does, but I want to give you my thoughts on it. This is an incredible option. The quality is as good as you’ll need for a stream, and even recording for youtube videos, and those added features, specifically clipguard and the wavelink mixer are seriously game changing. I really like having clipguard enabled, gives me some piece of mind knowing I’m always going to be putting out good audio even if I’m loud and shouty, and the mixer is especially cool, being able to split up your game audio from your music from your voice chat mates, and being able to have it so you can hear some while your stream cant is fantastic.

Overall, this gets a solid recommendation from me. While it isn’t the cheapest, and the top half of the stand isn’t the best, what you do get, the quality, the features, is well worth the price tag especially if you make money from your streams or videos. Sound investment.
