Without fail, every video containing an RTX 3080 gets countless comments about the stock levels, or lack thereof, of those cards. Everyone is hyped about them, and for good reason. They are impressive cards that actually seem to offer plausibly decent value for money, but do you actually need one? Well I’ve got some now “last gen” GPUs, a 2080ti, 2080, 2070, and a 1070, so lets compare how well these perform at the different resolutions and see if you should actually consider upgrading, but first, if you haven’t already, consider subscribing for more videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday!

The obvious answer is no, you don’t need one, but there are some cases where it might make more sense to want one, so lets take a look at them. If you are playing at 1080p, unless you are using 240 or 360Hz monitors, you don’t really need more than an RTX 2080 or GTX 1080ti, give or take. Those cards sit right around the 144FPS mark, and are fairly consistent at it too. Here’s the set of 1080p benchmarks to explain more.

At 1440p, it makes more sense to be stepping up to 2080tis and 3080s, especially for high refresh rate, ultra settings gameplay. Although in reality even a GTX 1070 is fine if you are willing to turn a few settings down so it’s not like they are necessities. Anyway, lets take a look at the 1440p numbers.

At 4K it starts to make more sense going for the truly high end cards. A GTX 1070 just doesn’t cut it, and even the 2070 struggles. If you want a locked 60FPS, a 2080ti or 3080 are pretty much your only options, and if you are a mad man and want to game at 4K 144Hz, well the 3080 or dare I say it, the 3090, are your best bets. Here’s the 4K numbers.

What’s interesting is that if you’ve got a GTX 1070 and are considering upgrading, you are getting 2x the performance at 1080p, or nearly 3x the performance at 4K, at the cost of spending 4x what your card is currently worth. It’s a very sizable upgrade, if expensive. If you’ve got a 2070, it still might be worth it, if you are playing at 1440p or above, and must have the highest settings on. Anything above that and I’m not sure that, in general anyway, it’ll be worth the extra cash.

For me, the way I upgrade my PC is basically if I notice a problem, I’ll look to solve it. If I’m actively noticing lagging or low FPS while gaming, yeah I’d think about a new GPU. I’d probably turn some settings down first, but still. I’m not one for frivolous upgrades, and in general that’s what I recommend to you. Is there an actual problem with your gaming experience, or do you just want the new shiny thing? I mean, that’s ok too, it’s your money, but the majority of people can rest assured that the 3080 doesn’t absolutely have to be in their PC right now.

Of course the 3070 is coming out very soon, so if you’d like to see a 3070 tested against this lot hit that subscribe button and let me know in the comments.
