This “Ergonomic” mouse was just £20 on Amazon, but there is a slew of other options from unnamed brands, or Logitech if you really want. What we’ve got here is a “Delux M618mini”, a cheap mouse I bought on Amazon but it doesn’t really matter what it’s called since this is the shape most of the “ergonomic” mice offer, even Logitech’s MX Vertical. The two bones in your wrist basically cross over if you go far enough, and can trap nerves and cause carpal tunnel syndrome, or a repetitive strain injury.

So, in comes the “ergonomic” mice to save the day. Well, only slightly. See these “vertical” mice aren’t actually, well, vertical. They are slanted over at an angle for a number of reasons, chief among them are if it was actually straight, when you go to left or right click you’d be twisting the mouse rather than pressing into your desk. It’s also more comfortable as you can more easily rest your hand on it rather than have to death grip it just to hold on.

The problem with this is that it’s not much more upright than a standard mouse. I use a Razer Naga Trinity when gaming, and that’s a pretty large and bulbous mouse meaning my hand already sits at a pretty good angle – it’s only a few degrees less than this, yet feels a lot more natural.

Getting used to this style of mouse does take time, it uses different muscles and movements to especially move left and right, meaning your precision will be off for a while until you get used to it. Once you do it isn’t so bad, except this particular mouse is absolutely dreadful, let me fire up CSGO and you’ll see why.

This uses the old school red LED sensor, which tops out at 2400DPI, and has an acceleration limit too. When you move it gently side to side, it tracks.. Ok… but if you move quickly to flick around, it matches you up to a point, then moves your cursor, and therefore your character, at a constant rate, a really nasty look that makes it feel very disconnected and laggy. Not good.

I’m sure you can get better ones, but we haven’t really answered the question of if you should or not. The thing is, while I am wholly under qualified to talk about this and please do listen to your doctor and other experts above me, from what I’ve read from research papers on the topic, there isn’t a clear answer to what shape is actually the best. None of the papers I read seemed to control for hand size or grip style, as claw grip would have significantly more muscle activity over palm grip, and none were long term studies.

This is my personal opinion based on anecdotal evidence alone, I feel like getting a mouse you are comfortable using, doing forearm stretches like these, and taking regular breaks is likely good enough for most people. Of course if you have RSI or carpal tunnel you might require something more ergonomic, making these much more sensible options, but for the rest of us I think we are good.
