To make it clear, this isn’t a video exposing some serious security vulnerability, performance issues or big gotcha, instead this is an opinion piece with some benchmark results from this, the ZOTAC RTX 3070 Twin Edge. I don’t think you should buy this, or any RTX 3070, right now, so let me explain why. But first, if you haven’t already, consider subscribing for more videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday!

So I feel I’ve got some explaining to do. The first, and most obvious, reason is that you can’t actually buy one right now. Stock levels on the 30 series cards have been shockingly low, and after speaking to some industry sources, I understand there to still be thousands of pre orders just in the UK alone waiting to be fulfilled. That’s pretty mental, although you can see why. When nvidia announced these cards, they made it abundantly clear that the 3070 would be faster than a 2080ti, for just $500.

But, it’s not quite. While yes, it’s remarkable to see 2080ti performance for what turned out to be 2080 level pricing, as cards are listed for £600+ right now, it more matches the 2080ti, rather than handily beats it. This ZOTAC card, well its even slower too, let’s take a look at the benchmarks.

This card in particular is actually more expensive than the founders edition, even at non inflated pricing, which isn’t great. It doesn’t get overly hot or loud, no more than most other gpus I’ve tested, but not being able to beat a 2080ti at all is a shame. It still performs well, don’t get me wrong. Sitting pretty at 130-140FPS in most games at 1440p ultra settings is brilliant, but even comparable 3070s should be able to give you more performance than this – and this painful design around the power connectors makes it way, way more difficult than it should be to just plug the damn thing in.

Another reason for you to hold off buying one is the new amd cards. They are set to drop fairly soon, and may provide good competition against team green especially if their stock levels are good. We need to wait for independent benchmarks to see if they do compete well, but that might be reason enough for you to wait. A knock on factor to their launch is that according to the rumour mill, NVIDIA are planning on releasing TI or Super versions of the 3070 and 3080 very soon to directly combat AMD’s new offerings. Depending on the performance level of these, you might be buying a card today that you won’t get until the new ones come out, and they are faster for similar money.

And lastly, if you can hold off buying one until stock levels return to a more normal state, and all the pre-orders get fulfilled, you should be able to pick one up for a significant amount less money. Like I said, 3070’s are all listed for pre-order at pretty much £600 or above, but their MSRP’s are more like £500. Waiting another month or two for your upgrade could well be the difference between you being able to get a 3080 for the same sort of price, or just save a massive chunk of change and get a 3070.

So there you have it, my argument for holding off buying a 3070, at least for the time being. For those of you upgrading from half a decade old hardware, I understand your frustrations greatly, but for those that just want the shiny new thing, well it pays to have patience here, quite literally.
