First off, I like to make it clear up front that this video is sponsored by ASRock, and in it I’ll be walking you through one of the key features of this Z590 Taichi board, the Killer DoubleShot Pro.

For those that missed the announcement, Rivet Networks who made the Killer products were acquired by Intel last year. So what we have here is an Intel KiLLER E3100 2.5G ethernet controller, and Intel KiLLER AX1675x Wi-Fi. Now both of these are impressive in their own right with the ethernet controller offering up to 2.5Gbps of bandwidth, and the WiFi offering up to 2.4Gbps, but thanks to the DoubleShot Pro, if you can connect them both up then you have a total of 4.9Gbps of bandwidth all from the built in NIC’s on your motherboard.

Now, the thing is, unless you have a 2.5G switch and a high speed WiFi access point plus something like a NAS that you can access at those speeds, you won’t see a significant benefit to having all that extra bandwidth. But combining the connections isn’t the only thing DoubleShot Pro can do. It actually works best on more limited internet connections thanks to the Prioritization Engine and bandwidth controls.

The Prioritization Engine automatically classifies and prioritises high priority traffic like your Fortnite game data over the less important stuff like background windows updates. If you were to do this at the router level it would be called QoS (Quality of Service) or packet prioritisation, but the benefit of also having this run on your system is the Killer Control Center can actually see what programs are transmitting data and manage the traffic. Your router’s QoS feature can’t see what program it is that sent the packet, just where it’s going, the type and port. Since the Control Center knows it’s your game sending data, it can hold or limit any other traffic that would slow your game traffic down.

On top of that, you can also tell it which interface you want different types of traffic to use. Since wired ethernet is generally the lowest ping and most reliable you’d probably want to set your games to use that, but the windows updates, downloads and streaming Youtube or Netflix aren’t as ping dependent so can go over WiFi instead. That keeps the ethernet connection free meaning you’ll get the best ping possible.

If your internet connection is really limited, then there is another nice feature too. You can connect your wired ethernet to your home internet, but connect the WiFi to a hotspot from your phone (assuming you have a reasonable data allowance). The Killer Prioritization Engine will then be able to funnel any non-important traffic through a different internet connection so your game’s data will be unimpeded.

So, how do you set it up? Well, first you’ll want to get the Killer driver and Control Center installed. Once that’s done, open up the Control Center and head to the Settings tab. Switch on DoubleShot Pro and connect both an ethernet cable and to either your home WiFi or a WiFi hotspot – whichever you’d prefer. Then head to the Prioritization Engine tab where you can set priority order and limit both the upload and download limits for each program. You can even block them outright if you’d rather. You can set which connection you want them to use by clicking on the icon on the left.

You’ll also want to head to the GAMEFAST tab and turn that on, so the second it detects a game it’ll give that traffic priority over everything else. You can also visit the Intelligence engine page to see it’s recommendations to improve your experience, and if you are using your WiFi it’s worth checking the WiFi Analyzer tab to see what bands are in use and which are free so you can get the most reliable and fastest connection.
