CYBERPOWER NEXT DAY ULTRA 5 SUPER SY1145 System Review
So, you are after a pre-built gaming PC but don’t fancy waiting the week or two that it normally takes to get someone to build it for you. Well, look no more, as Cyberpower sell “Next Day” systems, pre-built and in stock so you can have it delivered, well, next day. The model I have, the “ULTRA 5 SUPER SY1145” has the following specs:
- AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
- 16GB 2400MHz CL16 Corsair Vengeance LPX
- MSI RTX 2060 Super Ventus GP OC
- MSI B450M PRO-VHD MAX
- Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 120
- Intel 660p 512GB M.2
- 2TB Seagate Barracuda
- Corsair 465X
- Cooler Master MWE 550W
- Intel 9260 Wireless Card
- Windows 10 Home
Spec wise, that isn’t bad. There is one pretty reasonable sin there though, the RAM. 2400MHz is only one rung from the slowest DDR4 speeds you can reasonably buy, and it’s well known that especially 3rd generation Ryzen CPUs need, or at least greatly benefit from, much higher speed RAM – 3600MHz would be ideal but even 3000MHz or 3200MHz works too.
A few other notes while we are here. The cooler is an AIO unit, one of the cheaper models around. I’ll cover this more below, but much to my surprise it worked pretty well and was fairly quiet too.
As for the motherboard, it’s definitely one of the cheaper ones they could have chosen. While it’s not a problem in any way, and is more than capable of handling the 3600X that’s fitted to it, it’s not what I would call the most upgradable option around. Not a big deal, just something to keep in mind.
Build Quality
Cyberpower did a fairly good job in building the system, cable management (shown below) is decent, although not what I’d necessarily call “professional”. The did zip tie the spare PCIe power connector down so it doesn’t stick out, but the rear looks very hectic, a bit like a rat’s nest. While the RGB fans aren’t helping, it could definitely be done better.
The rear I/O, often a confusing place for people new to PC’s, especially ones with dedicated graphics cards, does have a few pieces of tape over the motherboard’s display outputs, since the Ryzen 3600X doesn’t have integrated graphics and even if it did you wouldn’t want to be using them. With that said, the tape seems to have been thrown on rather haphazardly. Not a big deal, but something to note.
One other note on build quality is actually the shipping/receiving experience. I actually had to return the system as the CPU had managed to become damaged some time between Cyberpower setting up the system fully, and it arriving at my test desk. I’m not sure that CPUs can really get “shipping damage”, but it seemed to happen regardless. Cyberpower did resolve the issue eventually, but it did take almost a month of back-and-forth communication to get it sorted.
Performance
At 1080p, it handles games well. Hitting well over 100FPS in all tested titles is great news, especially at ultra settings on them all. Even the 1% lows and minimums were great – it was a smooth and responsive gaming experience all round. If you were willing to turn the settings down a little, you could easily use the system at 1440p at over 60FPS which is fanstastic.
Temps wise, the CPU peaked at 66°c, while the GPU hit 71°c, which is pretty respectable especially considering the noise output was reasonably low even while gaming. I really wasn’t expecting the cheap-o AIO cooler to be all that good, but remarkably it was great. It kept the 3600X cool under load, from both gaming and more productivity apps like Blender.
Pricing
Cyberpower are selling this next day system for £1258.80 at the time of writing (including VAT that is). That’s not bad, a little price-premium as a the sum of the parts cost – which is end user pricing, not trade-discounted pricing – is pretty similar to this, although of course this has the benefit of being build for you, available next day and you have a single point of contact if anything goes wrong so for the right person it could be worth it.
Verdict
This is a good system, with one ‘cardinal sin’, and a couple nice-to-have’s missing. The RAM being the cheapest stuff you can find should really be switched out for a faster kit, even if it raises the price by a tenner, and a little more care going to building and cable managing wouldn’t hurt too. Pricing is reasonable enough, and at the end of the day, as long as the one that turns up actually works, it’s a well performing gaming PC that runs cool and quiet. I think it’s worth of a silver award, with gold on the horizon should they decide to remedy the RAM speed issue and maybe a little more tidy on the cable management.
Cyberpower SY1145 System
Summary
Good system with great performance, but with some faster RAM could go even further.
