Jeep Hacked!
Your car works, now it doesn’t.
This is a big fear of every motor vehicle driver, your driving down the road and you car just stops working, no engine, no brakes and its not a mechanical. This has been shown in TV shows and movies for some time now and most of us though it was just science fiction, we were wrong.
Wired’s Andy Greenberg went to St. Lois and was asked to drive a brand new Jeep Cherokee, seems normal right, think again. The hackers firstly took control of the AC unit, then the radio. Greenberg attempted to change the radio manually but the hackers had other plans. If someone hacks you car and they do this its an inconvenience and may even frighten you, but its not life threatening however they can do much more. The lovely people then deprived Greenberg from using the accelerator. They have not said if they can enable or disable your brakes but if you can turn disable the gas pedal, they can probably disable the brakes.
Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek are the masterminds behind this hack, which disabled a Jeep Cherokee. I don’t know if these guys are heroes or evil genius’, i’m leaning towards the later for now. Your might remember that there was a hack like this a few years ago, where the hackers had full control over the vehicle. Funnily enough the same guy’s did that too, check it out here.
The hackers are going to do a talk at Black Hat and there they are going to spill the secrets of how they did this. You should know that if own a new Jeep there is a firmware update which YOU MUST install. Get it here. As the number of computers in your car is increasing and now you cant even turn on your car unless the computer’s happy, this could happen to you. Not me because you cant hack my bike.
