My test desk has been looking a little dull recently, I mean it’s where I benchmark pretty much everything and it’s just in a dark corner of the room, so since Corsair sent over their LS100 monitor LED strips for me to look at, I thought I’d set them up here, brighten up my benchmark area and see if they are any good.

First we need to see what’s in the box, I’m only showing the “starter kit” here which is designed for 1 monitor, it comes with a mini lighting node with 2 channels which I think can have like 4 of the longer strips connected per channel or so. You also get mounting hardware for the strips, as the controller has adhesive pads on the back already, these are adhesive backed magnets which means you will need to permanently attach them to your monitor, even if you can easily remove the strips. You also get a power brick – a 5V 5A one so not exactly low power – and of course the RGB strips themselves, two long and two shorter ones.

The strips themselves are actually really tall which is strange, they have a heavy diffusion layer on top so the light is nice and soft that comes off them, and movable support pieces to match your sticky magnets on your monitor. Setup is pretty simple, I’m using some tape on the back of the monitor so I don’t have to perma-mount these, and you just stick a few on, plug in the controller with power and USB, download iCUE and you are set.

Once it’s all stuck down and setup, you can see the difference it makes. In a dark corner it looks great. It lights up a reasonable space around the monitor and is pretty smooth. Where it gets interesting is in the different modes you can use. There’s your usual waves and rainbow and static colours, but the ones I like are video and audio mode.

With video mode, iCUE looks at what’s on your screen then averages out the colours on each edge, so you get a matching colour around the display. It’s pretty obvious on the windows desktop, since it’s just bright blue, but it’s a bit harder to notice in game – with CSGO it uses a pretty muted colour scheme, so it’s kinda just lighting the wall in a cream colour, but for more vibrant games I’m sure it’ll be better.

Then there’s audio mode, which works like those old audio spectrum displays, changing colour to the song. It’s pretty jittery which is a shame, but if you want to listen to music and have some effects in RGB, you can. There’s also fireplace mode which is kind of nice, although the colours seem a little off there, and borealis mode which is a lot more flickery than I’d like personally. It’s pretty nice though for a cool and chill look.

So, are the LS100s worth the… wait what?? £90 for some freakin LEDs?? Whaaaatt? Oh wow. Ok, well the bad news is that if you want to be able to do the ambient lighting stuff, it’s going to cost you about that much to DIY it, but the good news is if you just want some night lighting on the back of your monitor, you can get a basic LED strip for like £15, it just won’t tie in with any other RGB products you have or do the ambient lighting bits. Pros and cons.
